Hummingbirds need extra fluids when temperatures heat up

Hummers swarm to a feeder in Walnut, California.  Photo by Kelly Asada

Avid birder Kelly Asada has reported swarms of hummingbirds at her feeder since temperatures have reached the high 80s.  She currently makes nine cups of nectar a day to keep the hummers happy.  Hummingbirds appreciate extra fluids in hot weather.  Use a 4:1 ratio (4 cups water: 1 cup sugar) when making homemade nectar.  It's OK to weaken the sugar solution a bit in hot weather.  Never use honey or red dye!  Both are known to be bad for the birds.
Happy Birding!
