Hummingbirds struggle to find food after Santa Ana winds

Hummingbirds seek nourishment from feeders after recent wind storms.  Photo by J.J. Meyer
The tiniest residents of the San Gabriel Valley took the brunt of the windstorms that whipped through Southern California last week.  Hummingbirds lost much of their food supply when the winds battered plants and trees.  Santa Ana winds that blow hot and dry offshore are known to reach hurricane strength.  Orange County was not hit as hard as parts of Los Angeles.  Still, it's a good idea to clean and fill your hummingbird feeders.  It's also nesting season for Anna's and Allen's hummingbirds.

  2. Hey Backyard Birder you have been busy! Tons of good information and the photographs were great. :) Thanks for getting out the information to us especially to remind us all to clean out the hummingbird feeders a few days. We all love hummingbirds but knowing by not cleaning the feeders we could actually be hurting them and in the end killing them makes me clean my feeder out every 2 days. Let's continue to get the word out as I see so many hummingbird feeders with old red nectar in neighbor's yards. Not good.
