More bluebirds to love

A Western Bluebird spotted in Linda Vista Park, Mission Viejo

About 30 years ago, Midwest ornithologists noted an alarming decrease in the bluebird population and speculated it may be due to shrinking habitat and natural nesting sites. The Bluebird Recovery Program started as a result with volunteer organizations now active in 25 states and four Canadian provinces. An army of volunteers from the Southern California Bluebird Club have installed nesting boxes throughout Orange County to help increase its numbers. As cavity nesters, bluebirds welcome the man-made boxes. And because of these efforts, bluebird numbers have increased dramatically. Next time you happen to be strolling through the park, check for the boxes. Bluebirds may be close by.
Happy birding!
