Phoebe stars in Birds & Blooms Magazine

Phoebe's Nest Cam has logged more than 11 million views.

The Irvine-based Web cam starring Phoebe has become an international hit.  Recently, Phoebe starred in the popular Birds & Blooms Magazine, a personal favorite of mine.  (I read Birds & Blooms immediately, while many of my other subscriptions sit on the coffee table waiting)

Phoebe lays an egg in her second clutch of the season

     Phoebe is busy with her second clutch of the season.  She laid an egg on Jan. 24. She will likely lay another egg in the next day or so, usually just after sunrise.  You can watch her live on the Phoebe Allen's Webcam. 

     Phoebe is a non-migratory Channel Islands Allen's Hummingbird.  She builds her golf ball-sized nests in a rose bush and lays eggs about the size of a Tic Tac mint.  Nesting season for hummingbirds is October through early June.  They typically have four to five clutches per season with two eggs laid per clutch.  They hatch after 17 days and chicks typically fledge three to four weeks later.  Phoebe will sometimes build a new nest, but frequently repairs old nests as she did with this one from Bob and Rose.

Boomerang Birds?

     Apparently, humans aren't the only species with offspring that boomerang back home after they leave the nest.  We've just witnessed it with hummingbirds on the live Webcam at phoebeallens.com.  Bob, the larger of the two chicks that fledged on Jan. 2 returned to the nest this morning.  Phoebe, the mother hummingbird, flew in and fed both chicks huddled in the nest.  Shortly after, Rose decided it was time to go.  Bob was sitting alone in the nest when Rose did a flyby.  Very cute.
     The owner of the site, Joe Dellwo, says he'll post a replay of the fledging action once the nest goes empty.

Thousands of viewers on fledge watch this week

A female Allen's hummingbird has nested in the same Irvine courtyard for many years.

     Log on to the Live Hummingbird Webcam to view the latest two chicks fledge from the crowded nest.  The two chicks, which hatched on Dec. 10 & 11,  are already testing their wings for their first flight.  Listed as one of the top birding sites, this prolific female Allen's hummingbird has captured the hearts of thousands across the globe.  You can usually view a clip of the lift off on YouTube in case you miss it.

Allen's hummingbirds are nesting

It seems strange for a bird to nest in the winter, but not if you happen to be an Allen's hummingbird living year-round in Southern California.  A well-known hummingbird named Phoebe (or one of her offspring) is already sitting on two eggs, laid on 11/22 & 11/25.  Expect hatching on December 8 & 10.
