Named for the orange hood on the male, orioles visit Southern California in spring and summer. Orioles are insect, nectar and fruit eaters. They often visit nectar feeders, but are elusive and nervous around humans. Hooded orioles commonly build nests in palms. Look for them along the coast until September when they return to their wintering habitats in Mexico.
